Covid new variants BA.2.86, EG. 5.1 does not pose any danger to Indians: Experts

He noted that India has an edge over the two new variants, as the country has “since the beginning got good immunity so it will not affect India adversely”. Although there has been slight uptick in cases, Dr Gilada said the variants are not giving rise to any kind of oxygen demand, demand for bed ICU ventilators and deaths are very, very low.

According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) latest weekly epidemiological report, EG.5.1 is showing an increasing trend. The WHO added EG.5.1 to the list of variants under monitoring in July. “EG.5.1 has shown an increasing trend in prevalence from 6.2 per cent in week 24 (June 13-19) to 11.6 per cent by week 28 (July 11-17),” the report said. However, “we need not panic or worry,” Dr Ishwar Gilada, an infectious disease expert, told IANS.

The prevalence of HIV positivity among Tuberculosis (TB) patients in Karnataka is the third highest in the country after Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, according to data from National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) outlined in the India TB Report 2023. Therefore, there is no point in questioning the step or going into the nitty gritty, rather the government must ensure that the rule is enforced properly among sellers. Dr Trupti Gilada, an infectious expert shared with News9, “Even before this study came out, it was found that individuals who were BCG vaccinated showed a lesser risk of bladder cancer as compared to those who were not. This gave the idea that the BCG vaccine could prevent bladder cancer if given locally. In this particular study, the researchers found that those individuals who were receiving the BCG vaccine when followed up over a period of years were reported to have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and death. Therefore, this was one of the benefits that the researchers found.”
